Lord Krishna was the eight son of Devaki and vasudeva. Hence the historical significance justifies why the birth is called “Janmashtami”.

Lord Krishna was brought up in Gokul under care and love of Yashoda. Lord Vishnu asked Devaki to keep lord Krishna away from the sight of uncle Kansa who was cunning and clever minded. Krishna with the help of his elder brother Balram killed Kansa after growing up.
