The birthday of Lord Krishna is being celebrated with lots of enthusiasm among Hindus. Krishan or Krishna has many avatars or roles to play for a normal human being. He is the leader, hero and protector in one soul.Krishna took birth at midnight on the ashtami or the 8th day of the Krishnapaksha or dark fortnight in the Hindu month of Shravan. This marked the day of “Janamashtami” or birth on the eight day.
The faith in lord Krishna is not restricted to Hindus western followers are also influenced by his aura and power.
On the day of Janmashtami, the devotees observe fast till the birth of Lord Krishna takes place at 12 midnight.
The biggest celebration takes place at Vrindavan where Lord Krishna was born. Raslilas or the plays depicting the life history of Lord Krishna are being performed. The festival is celebrated with songs and dancing along Hare Krishna Hare Rama.
While the states of South like Maharashtra perform Handi competition where Krishna’s childhood act of stealing butter is enacted.
A pot full of cream and butter is tied high and devotees try their best to break the pot. The winner takes away a big prize money with his team.
Lord Krishna was the eight son of Devaki and vasudeva. Hence the historical significance justifies why the birth is called “Janmashtami”.
Lord Krishna was brought up in Gokul under care and love of Yashoda. Lord Vishnu asked Devaki to keep lord Krishna away from the sight of uncle Kansa who was cunning and clever minded. Krishna with the help of his elder brother Balram killed Kansa after growing up.
Janmashtami plays a big role in Hindu culture and religion.
