Diwali or the festival of lights is one of the most important festivals of Hindus. The festival of lights is celebrated all over the country with lots of enthusiasm and happiness. On this day Lord came back to Ayodhya defeating Ravana along with Sita and his brother Lakshman. Diwali is a festival to lease Goddess Lakhsmi, Goddess of wealth and happiness. It is believed that praying goddess Lakshmi on Diwali helps you to earn prosperity and happiness. Devotees clean their houses and decorate it with light. They are meant to eliminate dark and evil and lay a lightening path for Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi. It’s a way to welcome Goddess Lakshmi to shower her blessings on Diwali. Also it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi prefers cleanliness and the cleanest house gets her first blessings. This backs the fact that brooms, the object to clean your house are being worshiped on this day.

In 2017 festival of Diwali or Dipawali would be celebrated on October 19, 2017. Most Auspicious time for Laxmi and Ganesha Pujan (Diwali Pujan) would be from 19:10 to 20:20 (Indian Standard Time)

Diwali Puja Process

Diwali is the festival of Laxmi, the Goddess of prosperity and wealth. It is believed that Goddess Laxmi visit everyone during Diwali and brings peace and prosperity to all. On the night of Diwali "Lakshmi-Pujan" is performed in the evenings. A traditional Pujan is performed after sunset in all the homes.

Five pieces of ghee diyas (lamps) are lit in front of the deities, naivedya of traditional sweets is offered to the Goddess and devotional songs are sung in praise of Goddess Laxmi. After Deepawali Puja people light diyas (lamps) in their homes to usher in light and clear the darkness from the world.

In villages cattle are adorned and worshipped by farmers as they form the main source of their income. In south, cows are offered special veneration as they are supposed to be the incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi and therefore they are adorned and worshipped on this day.

Here are 10 steps to perform Diwali Pujan:-

Clean your house properly and purify it by sprinkling gomutra.
Create a raised platform covered with red piece of cloth with grains accumulated at the center.
Place a kalash filled with water and 5 mango leaves, supari and flower over the grains.
Place the idol of Goddess Lakshmi over the right of Kalash and Lord Ganesha over the left of Kalash.
Objects related to wealth, education should be blessed during the puja. Carry them along.
Place a lighted diya in the thali with haldi and kumkum.
Start Puja by applying tilak.
Recite diwali puja mantras and pour milk, flowers over the idol.
Offer sweet, coconut and fragrance stick to the idols.
Chant Ganesh and Lakshmi aarti.
May your house get all the blessings of Lord Ganesh and Goddess Lakshmi.
